According to the gospels, Jesus spent most of His ministry in Galilee. But near the end of His earthly life, Luke tells us, “Not long before it was time for Jesus to be taken up to heaven, he made up his mind to go to Jerusalem.” (Luke 9:51 NIRV) Jerusalem was more than a place to which Jesus wanted to go; it represented the fulfillment of His mission where God would save the world through His suffering, death, and resurrection. Christ also invited His would-be followers to join Him on this journey (see Luke 9:22-23). But like it was for Jesus, Jerusalem is more than a mere location; it involves pursuing a particular way of life. During the season of Lent, the 40 days leading up to Easter, we will join Jesus “on the road’ so we can learn how to live as God intended and fulfill our own mission.
March 12 Introduction (Luke 9:51)
Following Jesus is a difficult way of life. We are willing to be on the road with Jesus when we are convinced that He is the way, the truth, and the life (see John 14:6)
March 19 The Road to Selflessness [or Self-Denial] (Luke 9:23; Luke 22:42)
While we tend to be selfish, Jesus calls us to live unselfishly. What does it mean to deny ourselves? How do we become like Christ and say, “Not my will but yours be done?”
March 26 The Road to Action (Luke 9:57-62)
Following Jesus requires more than “good intentions;” we have to do the right things.
April 2 The Road to God’s View (Luke 19:41-44)
How do we view the world, especially sin and wickedness? God’s heart aches over such matters, do ours?
April 9 The Road to Sacrifice (Luke 9:23-27; 23:26)
What does it mean to “take up your cross?” How is the sacrifice required of us illumined by Christ’s ultimate sacrifice?
April 16 The Road to Resurrection (Luke 24:13-35)
If we want to follow Jesus and live in His eternal presence, we must travel the paths of Scripture, hospitality, and fellowship to experience the Risen Christ.
April 23 The Road to Mission (Luke 24:44-49)
Jesus fulfilled His earthly mission and then left it in His disciples’ hands, telling them to be His witnesses and minister in the Holy Spirit’s power.
